Hiren Bhattacharrya - Life and Beyond




The legendary poet from Assam, Hiren Bhattacharyya, is no more among us. The veteran poet demised at 11:30 morning in Guwahati creating a void in the Assamese literature and intellectual world. The poet was admitted to Dispur Hospital on June 14th due critical lung infection and other complications. He was under ventilation for last 24 hours.

Hiren Bhattacharyya was born in Jorhat in 1932 to fahter Tirthanath Bhattacharyya and mother Late Snehalata Bhattacharyya. Hiruda started writing poems at a very early age, with his first poem being published in 1957. Very soon he was hailed as the poet of youth and hope in Assamese. His first anthology of poems, Mor Desh Mor Premor Kabita were published only in 1972. The charm of his poetry lied in a unique blend of passion and fine lyricism. His ability to convey complex emotions through his writings and his lucid yet simple style made him one of the few popular poets of the contemporary Assamese literature. Drawing positively from life, love and humanity, Mr Bhattacharjya was a man of rare vision, insight and intellect. He was also known as 'Prem aru Rodalir Kobi' (Poet of Love and Sunshine). He uniquely considered all his creations to be a part of the same poem.

Hiren Bhattacharyya was editor of several known magazines and newspapers of Assam.

Hiru da has innumerable publications in Assamese and achieved many prizes and accolades for his poetry.Among the various honours that have been bestowed upon him, the more prominent ones are the Bishnu Rabha Award (1985), Soviet Desh Nehru Award (1987) and Sahitya Akademi Award (1992), and Assam Valley Literary Award for the year 2000.
