Assamese literature entered the era of novels/fictions in the late
19th century. The influence of British literature at that time can not be denied.
The first novel in the count is Padmanath Gohain Baruah's "Bhanumati". It was published in
1890 in series in the Assamese journal "Bijuli". After couple of years he wrote another novel
Lahori (1892). Another contemporary Assamese novelist was Rajanikanta Bordoli. His
novel "Miri Jiyoree"(1895) has the same status as "Romeo Juliet" in Assamese literature.
